Accurately simulating those feedbacks requires fully-coupled meteorology, climate, and chemistry models and presents significant challenges in terms of both scientific understanding and computational demand. This paper 5 reviews the history and current status of development and application of online coupled models. Several representative online coupled meteorology and chemistry models developed in the U.S. such as GATOR-GCMOM, WRF/Chem, CAM3, MIRAGE, and Cal-tech unified GCM are included along with case studies. Major model features, physi-cal/chemical treatments, as well as typical applications are compared with a focus on 10 aerosol microphysics treatments, aerosol feedbacks to planetary boundary layer meteorology , and aerosol-cloud interactions. Recommendations for future development and improvement of online coupled models are provided.

[1] A single-column chemistry and climate model has been used to study the impact of deforestation in the Amazon Basin on atmospheric chemistry. Over deforested areas, daytime ozone deposition generally decreases strongly except when surface wetness decreases through reduced precipitation, whereas nocturnal soil deposition increases. The isoprene and soil nitric oxide emissions decrease althoug...

Recent advances in chemistry and meteorology models and computational efficiency have allowed the operational use of coupled chemistry-transport models (CTMs) by local air quality forecasters. The adoption of numerical model guidance by operational forecasters, the number of whom has been increasing rapidly in the past several years, depends on the reliability of numerical model guidance in cri...
